The overall cost of depression in England in 2000 was estimated to be £9 billion. More than £8 billion of this cost was due to lost productivity as a result of work days lost resulting in claims for incapacity benefits (Thomas and Morris, 2003).
The longer a person is off sick, the more difficult it becomes for them to return to work and the less likely it is that they will return to work at all (Department for Work and Pensions, 2004). In part this is because many people with mental health problems fear that, no matter how good a recovery they have made, their symptoms will be made worse by going back to work. This is especially so for those who believe that work has either caused their health problem or made it worse (Jones et al., 2005).
How can Purple-Daisy Help?
We can offer mental health assessments and support in the workplace. We can support employees returning to work after mental ill health and support them in the workplace (or other venue) to help them maintain and improve their mental health and prevent illness occurring.
We can offer training to employers and employees about mental health issues and how to support each other. We also offer sessions on resilience, stress management and staying healthy.
At any one time, one sixth of the working age population of Great Britain experience symptoms associated with mental ill health such as sleep problems, fatigue, irritability and worry that do not meet criteria for a diagnosis of a mental disorder but which can affect a person’s ability to function adequately.
A further one sixth of the working age population have symptoms that by virtue of their nature, severity and duration do meet diagnostic criteria. These common mental disorders would be treated should they come to the attention of a healthcare professional. The commonest of these disorders are depression, anxiety or a mix of the two (Office for National Statistics, 2001).
